Excursion Train Trips
For more than 25 years, the Old Dominion Chapter of the NRHS has offered family-oriented railroad excursion trips in partnership with the Buckingham Branch Railroad. These are the only regularly scheduled trips of their kind in Virginia.
The ODC’s schedule typically holds a variety of excursions ranging in length from 45 minutes to 3 hours. Excursions depart and return to the picturesque station in Dillwyn. Vintage passenger cars from the heyday of American railroading, unique open-air cars and even cabooses usher our guests through the rolling hills, pastoral farmland, and deep forests of an unspoiled landscape in the heart of Central Virginia behind classic diesel locomotives. Some trips feature the unique and breathtaking view of the James River from the bridge at Bremo Bluff.
Whether it’s a 3-hour adventure to the James River or the lifetime memories of the Santa Express, the ODC’s trips are wonderful outings for the young and young-at-heart! Take some time to slow down and enjoy a unique way to sightsee your way across Central Virginia.
Springtime Special – reveals the beauty of the Virginia countryside with trips to through the blooms of Buckingham County each May and June. Some trips also include crossing the James River at Bremo Bluff. Select trains also feature a Wild West show from the Tom Mix Rangers.
Autumn Leaf Rambler – kicks up the fall colors as it meanders through the beautiful scenery on the way to the James River and its bridge above the rushing waters at Bremo Bluff. Travel though areas that only the railroad sees and enjoy the Tom Mix Rangers on select trains.
Santa Express – has been a Central Virginia tradition for generations. Little ones enjoy their first train ride and a visit from Santa right onboard. Santa’s helpers sing songs and pass out treats to make lifetime memories for children and adults alike. Many come back year after year to this one-of-a-kind experience.
